Some say these sheep produce tastier meat than wool breeds do. The hair sheep breeds include Barbados Blackbelly, Dorper, Katahdin, Painted Desert, Royal White, St. Croix and Wiltshire Horn.

Animal fibre “wool” of the pelage is a keratin protein-based product formed in specialised hair follicles located in the skin of a range of animal species and breeds farmed in Europe. It is described as a natural, renewable and biodegradable product of long-standing historical value. As with other mammals, domestic sheep reproduction occurs reproductive strategy is very similar to other domestic herd animals. A flock of sheep is generally mated by a single ram, which has either been chosen by a farmer or has established dominance through physical contest with other rams (in feral populations). Most sheep have a breeding season (tupping) in the autumn, though.

Animal protein-based fibers used in textiles often are assumed to have uniform properties independent of source, and yet are different when considering texture, structure, and color.
